Cumbria Police emerged victorious in a memorial rugby union match last weekend to raise money for charity in memory of two local heroes<\/p>\n
They took on Cumbria Fire & Rescue team last Saturday 20th<\/sup> May at Penrith Rugby Club and won 27-10. The match was in memory of police officer Nick Dumfreys and part time firefighter Ryan Johnson.<\/p>\n
Nick, originally from South Africa, worked in Cumbria Police\u2019s Road Policing Unit and died in January 2020 in a motorway crash as he responded to an emergency call.<\/p>\n
Ryan, from Penrith, was a part-time firefighter and died suddenly in December\u00a0last year after falling ill at rugby training.<\/p>\n
The match raised over \u00a33000 which will be split between The Great North Air Ambulance in memory of Nick and The Firefighters Charity in memory of Ryan.<\/p>\n
Stephen Reid who helped organise the match said:<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019d like to thank Penrith RUFC for hosting the match, The Little Griddle for providing the food, Mark Aston and Ast Signs for sponsoring the fire service rugby kit and the 300 Club for its support.\u00a0 It was a great event in memory of two very special people and we\u2019re happy to have raised money for two worthwhile causes.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
